Air pollution can be defined as the result of the change in the physical, chemical and biological properties of the atmosphere, so as to cause damage to human beings, fauna, flora and materials, restrict the full use and enjoyment of property or affect negatively the welfare of the population.

The pollution occurs when changing the air results in real or potential effects. Within this concept, one presupposes the existence of reference levels to differentiate the polluted atmosphere from that which is not polluted. The reference level under the legal aspect is called the Air Quality Standard

Given the growing concern of society and environmental agencies related to the Air Quality Pattern, Infraero has been conducting the Atmospheric Emissions Management Program in order to develop projects and actions to mitigate environmental impacts arising from the emission of air pollutants from the airport sites, both due to vehicle traffic in support of airport operations and the aircraft traffic in the yard.

Company's priority is to establish a methodology for analysis of pollutants, in order to differentiate the contribution of the airport site that comes from the vehicle traffic on surrounding roads. For this, the airport emissions should be characterized by an emission inventory. From the data collected, new shares may be implemented to monitor, control and reduce air pollutants.

It also is developing a computerized tool that allows the removal of the fuel consumption of the captive fleet and its calculation of CO2 emissions. The tool will allow monitoring of concrete results after the implementation of actions related to the fuel.

It is the intention of developing Infraero other works and studies to contribute to the management of pollutants, including:

• Inventory of atmospheric emissions and dispersion study of the pollutants coming from the airport activities, with evaluation of risk to human health in the surroundings of Congonhas Airport;

• Feasibility studies for the implementation of Fixed Utilities, to provide air conditioning, compressed air, clean water and power for aircraft when parked.
